Comparing Achilles tendon structure in road and treadmill runners

Differences Between Long Distance Road Runners and Treadmill Runners in Achilles Tendon Structure, Muscle Strength, Proprioception and Balance Performance

Observational University of Haifa · NCT06294093

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the structural differences of the Achilles tendon between long-distance road runners and treadmill runners. Healthy participants who run regularly will be recruited and will complete a demographic questionnaire. They will undergo a series of functional tests, including ultrasound examination of the Achilles tendon, balance, proprioception, muscle strength, and endurance tests. The results will be compared between the two groups to identify any significant differences in tendon structure and function.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are healthy runners who train regularly on either road or treadmill surfaces.

Not a fit: Patients with recent Achilles tendon injuries or surgeries, or those experiencing lower limb pain while running, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into how different running surfaces affect Achilles tendon health, potentially guiding injury prevention strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on running biomechanics, this specific comparison of road versus treadmill runners is relatively novel.
