What this trial studies
The 10,000 Step Club is a 6-month community walking program designed for individuals with Parkinson's disease and their caregivers in Las Vegas, Nevada. Participants will join organized walking groups at local parks, led by physical therapy students from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and will use Nordic walking poles to enhance stability and encourage full-body movement. The program aims to promote social interaction, physical activity, and accountability by encouraging participants to achieve a collective goal of 10,000 steps per day, with real-time tracking through step watches. The initiative is particularly focused on underserved areas with higher proportions of individuals with Parkinson's disease.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 30-85 with a neurologist-diagnosed Parkinson's disease who can walk independently.
Not a fit: Patients with health conditions that limit exercise participation or those with dementia may not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could improve physical activity levels and social connections for patients with Parkinson's disease, potentially enhancing their overall quality of life.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown that community-based exercise programs can significantly benefit individuals with Parkinson's disease, suggesting a positive outlook for this approach.
