What this trial studies

This pilot project aims to develop a community stroke self-management program tailored to the needs of African American stroke survivors living in rural Alabama. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study will assess the specific needs, access barriers, and existing resources for stroke self-management among this population. The program will focus on improving medication adherence, diet, physical activity, and psychological well-being. Additionally, the feasibility and acceptability of the tailored intervention will be evaluated to ensure it meets the expectations and preferences of the participants.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are African American individuals aged 50 and above who have a history of stroke and high blood pressure.

Not a fit: Patients with low cognitive function may not benefit from this study due to the nature of the self-management program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly enhance the self-management skills and overall quality of life for stroke survivors in this underserved community.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been various self-management programs for chronic conditions, this specific approach tailored to African American stroke survivors in rural settings is novel and has not been extensively tested.
