What this trial studies
This project involves the collection of primary tumor cell lines from patients with esophageal cancer to support research at the University Health Network. Samples will be obtained during surgical procedures or biopsies, ensuring that excess samples do not interfere with standard pathological diagnoses. The collected samples will help researchers grow tumor cell lines, addressing the challenge of limited access to these resources due to the rarity of gastro-esophageal tumors and contamination issues.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients diagnosed with esophagogastric cancer or GERD, who are scheduled for surgery or endoscopic procedures.
Not a fit: Patients who are not well enough to undergo surgery or EGD will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this initiative could enhance research capabilities and lead to better understanding and treatment options for esophageal cancer.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies involving tissue collection for cancer research have shown success in advancing understanding and treatment options, making this approach promising.
