Collecting data on anastomotic leakage after right colectomy
Open Versus Laparoscopic Right Colectomy: Does the Initial Approach Impact on Management and Outcome in Anastomotic Leakage? A Multicenter Cohort Study
This study looks at patients who had surgery to remove part of their colon to see how often they experience leaks at the connection point and how different treatments can help fix those leaks.

What this trial studies
This observational study collects data from patients who underwent elective right colectomy for both benign and malignant conditions across seven colorectal units in Austria from January 2010 to December 2019. The study focuses on analyzing demographic, perioperative, and postoperative data to understand the incidence and management of anastomotic leaks. Various interventions such as suturing, lavage, drainage, and fecal diversion are documented to assess their effectiveness in treating leaks. The retrospective nature of the study allows for a comprehensive evaluation of outcomes associated with different surgical approaches.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients undergoing elective right colectomy for benign or malignant diseases.
Not a fit: Patients requiring emergent surgery will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve understanding and management of anastomotic leaks, leading to better patient outcomes after right colectomy.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have explored anastomotic leaks, but this specific observational approach in the Austrian context may provide novel insights.
