Collecting blood samples from patients undergoing plasma exchange

Assessment of Changes in Normal and Pathological Immune Factors in Patients Undergoing Plasma Exchange

University of Iowa · NCT05004493

This study is collecting blood samples from patients with immune-related diseases who are having plasma exchange to see how their antibody levels change during treatment and to use the samples for future research.

What this trial studies

This observational study focuses on patients with immune-mediated diseases who undergo plasma exchange procedures to remove harmful antibodies. The study aims to collect and cryopreserve blood biospecimens, including plasma, serum, and PBMCs, for current and future research. Patients will be consented for participation shortly after being referred for plasma exchange, and the study will monitor antibody levels and BAFF levels in their blood throughout the treatment process. Importantly, participation will not alter the standard treatment plan for these patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients undergoing plasma exchange therapy for conditions like antibody-mediated rejection, NMO spectrum disorder, TTP, or CIDP.

Not a fit: Patients not undergoing plasma exchange therapy will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of antibody-mediated diseases and improve future treatment strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While this study is observational and focuses on biospecimen collection, similar studies have shown success in understanding immune-mediated diseases through plasma exchange.
