Co-creating a school community program to increase physical activity in 12–16-year-olds

Co-creating School Community Intervention Program on Physical Activity to Increase Health Equity in Children and Adolescents

Observational Vytautas Magnus University · NCT07120516

This project will try community and environmental changes plus 7-day activity tracking to see if increased physical activity improves sleep, health measures, and reduces health gaps for 12–16-year-old students at a Kaunas school.

What this trial studies

This is a mixed observational and interventional effort conducted at VDU Atžalynas Progymnasium in Kaunas, Lithuania, combining baseline cross-sectional measurements with a targeted intervention and follow-up. Participants and their parents complete questionnaires about health behaviors, well-being, and the living environment, while children undergo physical measurements and, if selected, wear activity monitors for seven days. The study links individual activity and sleep data with local environmental pollution measures (e.g., PM2.5, PM10, NO2) to explore relationships between exposures, behavior, and health indicators. Outcomes are compared between the baseline-only cohort and the intervention group at three months to see if community-level changes produce measurable improvements.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are children aged 12–16 who attend VDU Atžalynas Progymnasium, have parental consent and child assent, and are willing to complete questionnaires, physical measurements, and wearable monitoring if selected.

Not a fit: Children with severe medical or psychological conditions, significant mobility impairments, skin allergies preventing wearable use, lack of consent, or those outside the school or age range are unlikely to benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could help increase activity, improve sleep and metabolic health, and narrow health disparities among disadvantaged adolescents.

How similar studies have performed: Previous school-based physical activity programs have shown modest improvements in activity and wellbeing, but combining behavioral interventions with environmental pollution measurements is relatively novel and less tested.
