What this trial studies
This pilot will enroll up to 100 adults in East Flatbush for a 20-week, no-cost, client-choice pantry program that provides locally grown produce weekly. Participants will complete surveys and have skin carotenoid levels measured with a Veggie Meter at the start and end of the program to capture changes in fruit and vegetable intake. The primary outcome is food security, with secondary outcomes including fruit and vegetable intake and social connection. The intervention is delivered through a partnership between NYU and five community-based organizations and is based on multi-year formative research to inform future pantry implementations across New York City.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older who speak English or Haitian Creole, can travel weekly to the Brooklyn Center for Quality Life in East Flatbush, and are willing to provide informed consent.
Not a fit: People who cannot travel weekly to the pickup site, who do not speak English or Haitian Creole, or whose needs require clinical nutrition therapy rather than pantry support may not receive benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could increase food security and fruit and vegetable intake among participants and guide similar pantry models across the city.
How similar studies have performed: Client-choice pantry models and produce-prescription programs have shown promising effects on produce access and intake in other settings, though this locally grown, coalition-led pilot in East Flatbush is a novel implementation.
