Chitosan dressing for pulpotomy of immature permanent teeth

Efficacy of a Chitosan Dressing in Pulpotomy of Immature Permanent Teeth:Randomized Clinical Trial

NA · Minia University · NCT07323433

What this trial studies

This is a single-center interventional study at Minia University Hospital testing a chitosan dressing as the wound-covering material after pulpotomy in immature maxillary anterior teeth with carious or traumatic pulp exposure. Clinicians remove the infected coronal pulp, achieve hemostasis, and place the chitosan dressing over the remaining healthy pulp, then restore the tooth and follow patients over time. Outcomes include clinical signs of success, radiographic evidence of continued root development and apex closure, and the effect of hemostasis on healing. Participants are followed for about one year to document healing and root formation.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients with immature maxillary anterior teeth with pulp exposure from caries or trauma who are medically healthy (ASA class I) and can attend follow-up visits for about one year.

Not a fit: Patients with mature roots, signs of periapical inflammation, periodontal disease, vertical root fractures, previously started endodontic treatment, or systemic conditions affecting healing are unlikely to benefit from this approach.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, using a chitosan dressing could improve bleeding control and healing after pulpotomy and help immature teeth continue normal root development.

How similar studies have performed: Some laboratory and small clinical reports suggest chitosan can help control bleeding and support tissue healing, but evidence specifically for pulpotomy in immature permanent teeth is limited.
