Children who leave the pediatric emergency department before receiving care
Pediatric Patients Who Leave the Emergency Department Without Treatment
Hillel Yaffe Medical Center · NCT07134985
This project will try to find which clinical, operational, and demographic factors make children (0–17) or their caregivers leave the Hillel Yaffe pediatric emergency department before treatment is finished.

What this trial studies
Researchers will perform a single-center observational analysis of all children aged 0–17 who visited the Hillel Yaffe pediatric ED between January 2024 and December 2025, comparing those who left before completing evaluation or treatment with those who stayed. The team will examine clinical variables (triage level, presenting complaint), operational factors (wait times, ED crowding, time of arrival), and demographic data (age, guardian characteristics) to identify predictors of leaving without being seen or treated. Analyses will use routinely collected ED records to quantify associations and describe patterns over time. Findings will be contextualized with prior adult ED results and international literature.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 0–17 who presented to the Hillel Yaffe pediatric emergency department during January 2024–December 2025, including those who left before completing care.
Not a fit: Children who never visited Hillel Yaffe, who were seen and fully treated, or whose caregivers cannot be reached for follow-up are unlikely to receive direct benefit from this observational analysis.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help reduce pediatric departures without treatment by guiding interventions to shorten waits, improve triage, and enhance caregiver communication.
How similar studies have performed: Previous adult ED studies (including at Hillel Yaffe) found low triage acuity and long waits predict early departure, but pediatric-specific research is limited.
