What this trial studies

This observational study will measure thyroid function (typical thyroid profile tests such as TSH, free T4, and free T3) in adults with end-stage renal disease receiving regular hemodialysis at Sohag University Hospital. Patients with prior thyroid disease, recent thyroid treatment, acute kidney injury, pregnancy, or medications known to affect thyroid tests are excluded. Results will be analyzed for the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction and correlations with clinical factors such as dialysis duration and comorbidities. The study involves blood sampling during routine clinic visits and does not introduce experimental treatments.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older with end-stage renal disease who have been on regular hemodialysis for at least three months and who do not have a prior history of thyroid disease or recent thyroid treatment are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with known thyroid disorders, recent thyroid treatment, acute kidney injury, pregnancy or lactation, or who are taking medications that interfere with thyroid tests are unlikely to benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could support more routine thyroid screening for people on long-term hemodialysis, enabling earlier detection and management of thyroid-related complications.

How similar studies have performed: Prior observational studies have repeatedly shown a high prevalence of thyroid dysfunction among dialysis patients, supporting routine screening, though interventional benefits from screening are less well established.
