Checking a hand laterality recognition test for people after stroke

Validity of an Open-access Handedness Recognition Task in Stroke Patients

Neuron, Spain · NCT07497464

What this trial studies

Participants complete two identical assessment sessions that include a simple reaction time (SRT) task and a hand laterality judgement task (HLJT) showing photos of left and right hands at various rotations. Primary outcomes are SRT reaction time and HLJT accuracy (percent correct) and decision-making latency, with two sessions used to assess reliability. Researchers also collect motor and kinesthetic imagery scale scores, demographic and cognitive data, and conduct a structured interview to learn whether participants used motor imagery or visual strategies. The protocol aims to define the psychometric properties of the open-access HLJT specifically in a post-stroke population.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults over 18 who have had a stroke, have a MoCA score above 21, and can follow simple task instructions are the ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People with severe cognitive impairment, other significant neurological disorders, or inability to perform or understand the computerized tasks are unlikely to benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could provide a validated, easy-to-administer tool to measure motor imagery and lateralized motor processing in stroke survivors, which may help guide rehabilitation planning.

How similar studies have performed: Hand laterality tasks have been used successfully in healthy adults and in some stroke research, but open-access validation focused on psychometric properties in a post-stroke group is limited.
