Characteristics of patients with invasive meningococcal disease
Epidemiological, Clinical and Biological Caracteristics of Patients Presenting With Invasive Meningococcal Disease in the West of France
This study looks at the different ways invasive meningococcal disease shows up in patients during a recent spike in cases to better understand its impact and how COVID-19 might have changed things.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to analyze the epidemiological, clinical, and biological characteristics of patients diagnosed with invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) during an unusual increase in cases observed between late 2022 and early 2023. The study will focus on atypical presentations of IMD, particularly cases with high rates of bacteremia without meningitis and an unusual distribution of serogroups, especially serotype Y. The research will also consider the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the transmission dynamics of meningococcal infections and the potential reduction in mucosal immunity among young adults. Data will be collected from patients diagnosed at Poitiers University Hospital.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals clinically diagnosed with invasive meningococcal infection.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have a clinical diagnosis of invasive meningococcal infection will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of invasive meningococcal disease and inform better prevention and treatment strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on meningococcal disease, this specific focus on atypical presentations and the impact of recent pandemic-related changes is relatively novel.
