What this trial studies
Over a three-year period (2025–2028) the study follows a prospective longitudinal cohort in selected areas of Kano, Kaduna, and Nasarawa to measure the effects of a multimedia social and behavior change intervention. The intervention, led by BBC Media Action, uses radio, TV, other media, and community outreach alongside supply-side activities to encourage modern contraceptive use and informed decision-making. Mixed quantitative and qualitative methods will estimate impacts on current use and intent to use modern contraception, explore behavioral pathways, measure cost-efficiency, and assess sustainability. Data collection will compare intervention and comparison areas to understand how the program works alone and when combined with other family planning programs.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are self-identified females aged 15–44 who are sexually active (in union), able to give informed consent, and currently resident in the selected intervention or comparison areas.
Not a fit: People outside the target age range, those who are not sexually active or not in union, males, or individuals living outside the selected study areas are unlikely to receive direct benefit from this intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the program could increase informed contraceptive use and reduce unintended pregnancies by helping women and couples make and act on family planning choices.
How similar studies have performed: Previous mass media and social behavior change programs have shown positive effects on family planning knowledge, attitudes, and sometimes contraceptive uptake, but rigorous longitudinal evaluations combining impact and cost-efficiency remain limited.
