What this trial studies

This study aims to develop and pilot test an intervention called Health is Wealth: A Cervical Health Program, which focuses on promoting cervical cancer screening among African American and Sub-Saharan African immigrant women. The study will first assess awareness and cultural factors affecting cancer prevention, followed by identifying socioecological barriers to screening. In the second phase, the program's feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy will be evaluated among a targeted group of participants. The approach includes surveys, focus groups, and a quasi-experimental design to tailor the intervention effectively.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are Black women, specifically African American or Sub-Saharan African immigrants, who have not had a pap smear in the last three years.

Not a fit: Patients who have a history of cervical cancer or hysterectomy, or who do not self-identify as Black women, will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly increase cervical cancer screening rates among Black women, leading to earlier detection and better health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in similar approaches to increase cancer screening rates among underserved populations, indicating potential for this intervention.
