What this trial studies

This study investigates the effect of injecting calcium chloride into the major atrial ganglionic plexus during on-pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery to reduce the incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation. It is a prospective, two-armed randomized controlled trial where one group receives calcium chloride and the other receives sodium chloride as a control. The hypothesis is that calcium chloride can induce autonomic neurotoxicity, thereby suppressing the neural networks responsible for initiating atrial fibrillation. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention in preventing atrial fibrillation in the first week post-surgery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years old who are scheduled for on-pump CABG surgery.

Not a fit: Patients over 75 years old, those with preoperative atrial fibrillation, or significant comorbidities may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could significantly reduce the occurrence of atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing CABG, leading to improved recovery and outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using calcium chloride in this context is novel, similar studies targeting atrial fibrillation prevention have shown varying degrees of success.
