Bump the Lump: a speech-language therapy program for persistent throat lump sensations
Bump the Lump: Creation and Validation of Speech Language Pathology Intervention for the Treatment of Globus Pharyngeus

What this trial studies
This is a proof-of-concept intervention that develops and delivers a standardized speech-language pathology (SLP) protocol for adults reporting globus pharyngeus. Participants evaluated at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Center for Voice and Swallowing Disorders will receive the SLP protocol while patients with swallowing disorders are excluded. The study addresses a gap in the literature where existing SLP approaches for globus are heterogeneous and not consistently applied. Symptom response and patient-reported impact on quality of life will be tracked to determine whether a standardized approach is practical and helpful.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (age 18 and over) seen at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Center for Voice and Swallowing Disorders who report a complaint of globus pharyngeus and do not have a diagnosed swallowing disorder.
Not a fit: Patients with diagnosed swallowing disorders, or whose throat symptoms are clearly caused by dysphagia, gastroesophageal reflux, or major esophageal motor disorders, are unlikely to benefit from this behavioral SLP protocol.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the protocol could reduce throat lump symptoms and improve quality of life by providing a consistent, repeatable SLP treatment approach.
How similar studies have performed: Previous SLP interventions for globus have shown some promise but results are mixed and methods vary widely, so benefit remains uncertain without a standardized protocol.
