Breathing and lung strength in people with Parkinson's disease
Investigation of Respiratory Functions, Inspiratory Muscle Strength, Physical Fitness and Aerobic Capacity in Patients With Parkinson's Disease
This study will test breathing muscle strength, lung function, and aerobic fitness in people aged 50–80 who have Parkinson's disease compared with similar healthy adults.

What this trial studies
This observational study will enroll people with Parkinson's disease aged 50–80 and age-matched healthy controls and divide patients by Modified Hoehn and Yahr stage (≤2.5 vs >2.5). Demographic and clinical data will be recorded and disease severity quantified using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, with cognitive screening by MMSE. Inspiratory muscle strength will be measured with a PowerBreath K5, pulmonary function with standard pulmonary function testing, and physical fitness and aerobic capacity with exercise testing protocols. Researchers will compare respiratory and fitness measures across disease stages and controls without applying interventional treatments.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are people aged 50–80 with a neurologist-confirmed Parkinson's diagnosis and an MMSE score of 24–30 who can communicate and walk without a device and can safely perform exercise testing.
Not a fit: People with severe cognitive impairment, inability to communicate, use of walking aids, significant visual or other neurological disorders, congestive heart failure, or medical contraindications to exercise are unlikely to benefit or be eligible.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the study could identify respiratory and fitness deficits tied to disease stage that help clinicians target breathing and exercise therapies earlier.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have documented respiratory muscle weakness and reduced pulmonary function in Parkinson's disease, so this observational comparison builds on established findings rather than introducing an untested approach.
