What this trial studies
This non-randomized controlled trial compares 90 volunteers aged 50+ who receive 80–90 hours of BrainLive Coach training and then volunteer with BrainLive Connect to 90 control volunteers who attend educational workshops and receive dementia materials. Participants complete baseline (T0) and post-intervention (T1) assessments using validated measures of dementia knowledge, sense of competence in dementia care, approaches to dementia, general self-efficacy, quality of life, and social capital. The study uses mixed methods to capture quantitative changes and qualitative feedback on skills, self-efficacy, and wellbeing. Training and volunteering are delivered in Cantonese at The University of Hong Kong and partner community organizations.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are Hong Kong residents aged 50 or older who are fluent in Cantonese, can read and write Chinese, have at least Form 3 education, and can commit to the training and volunteer schedule.
Not a fit: People who cannot participate in training or volunteering due to significant hearing or vision impairment, inability to communicate in Cantonese, or lack of time to complete 80–90 hours are unlikely to benefit.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, better-trained volunteers could deliver higher-quality cognitive stimulation sessions and improve support for people living with dementia.
How similar studies have performed: Cognitive stimulation therapy and volunteer-delivered dementia programs have shown benefits in prior studies, but intensive formalized coach training for 'young-old' volunteers is relatively novel and less well studied.
