Benson's relaxation versus Tai Chi for COPD
Comparative Effects of Benson's Relaxation Technique and Tai Chi in COPD
This study will try Benson's relaxation and Tai Chi in people with moderate-to-severe COPD to see which approach helps breathing, physical endurance, and quality of life.

What this trial studies
This is a randomized clinical trial enrolling 54 adults with moderate-to-severe COPD treated at Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital. Participants are randomly assigned to two groups that will perform either Benson's Relaxation Technique or Tai Chi for 45 minutes, five days per week, over eight weeks. Outcomes include measures of pulmonary function, breathlessness, physical endurance, and quality of life collected before and after the intervention. The trial uses convenience sampling and requires participants to be physically able and willing to perform the assigned exercises.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults with moderate-to-severe COPD, roughly aged 40 to 60, who are physically able and willing to perform Tai Chi or Benson's relaxation are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients with pulmonary hypertension, recent myocardial infarction or unstable angina, uncontrolled hypertension, significant spinal deformities, or a history of loss of consciousness are excluded and unlikely to benefit from this protocol.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, these low-cost, non-drug exercises could reduce breathlessness and improve endurance and quality of life for people with COPD.
How similar studies have performed: Previous research has shown promising benefits of Tai Chi as part of pulmonary rehabilitation, while evidence for Benson's relaxation specifically in COPD is more limited.
