Bedside lung ultrasound to find early breathing problems after low-flow anesthesia for gallbladder surgery
Evaluation of Early Postoperative Pulmonary Complications That Can be Detected by Ultrasonography in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy With Low-flow Anesthesia
This will use quick bedside lung ultrasound to test for early lung collapse and other breathing problems right after extubation in adults having laparoscopic gallbladder surgery with low-flow anesthesia.

What this trial studies
Adults scheduled for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia with low-flow fresh gas flow (0.5–1 L/min) will be enrolled in an observational protocol. Bedside lung ultrasonography will be performed immediately after extubation to score atelectasis and other respiratory findings, and patients will be monitored for subsequent pulmonary complications and any supportive interventions (oxygen, respiratory exercises, mobilization, non-invasive ventilation). Relevant perioperative data (BMI, ASA class, anesthesia parameters) will be recorded and patients with preexisting lung disease or abnormal preoperative lung ultrasound will be excluded. No experimental treatments are given and clinical care decisions remain with the treating team.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (ASA 1–3) scheduled for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy with BMI 18–35 kg/m2 who can give informed consent and do not have preexisting lung disease or pregnancy.
Not a fit: Patients with emergency surgery, ASA 4 or higher, existing lung disease, prior thoracic surgery, pregnancy, or a high preoperative lung ultrasound score are unlikely to benefit from this observational protocol.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, earlier detection of postoperative atelectasis could enable prompt treatments that reduce pulmonary complications and shorten recovery.
How similar studies have performed: Lung ultrasound is already shown to be a quick and reliable method for detecting postoperative atelectasis, but the specific effects of low-flow anesthesia in laparoscopic cholecystectomy have been little studied.
