What this trial studies

This is a prospective, single-center experimental study comparing basic inspiratory muscle training (IMT), functional inspiratory muscle training (F-IMT), and a control group in people with COPD. Fifty-one participants meeting GOLD diagnostic criteria and without an acute exacerbation in the prior month will be enrolled at Yalova Training and Research Hospital. Interventions will focus on respiratory muscle exercises delivered as basic IMT or F-IMT, with outcomes including respiratory muscle strength, dyspnea, exercise capacity, and early-term functional changes. The aim is to determine which training approach produces greater short-term improvements in symptoms and functional performance.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults with COPD diagnosed by GOLD criteria who are clinically stable (no exacerbation in the last month), can walk independently, and can participate voluntarily.

Not a fit: Patients experiencing a recent COPD exacerbation or those with uncontrolled heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or orthopedic/neurological conditions that prevent participation may not benefit or be eligible.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the training could reduce breathlessness, strengthen respiratory muscles, and improve exercise tolerance for people with COPD.

How similar studies have performed: Conventional inspiratory muscle training has prior evidence for improving muscle strength and dyspnea, while functional IMT is a newer approach with limited published data.
