Bacteriologically controlled reusable water bottles for colonoscopy.

Evaluation of the Microbiological and Organizational Impact of the Use of Bacteriologically Controlled Water in COLOscopy for an Evolution of Our Practices Towards a More Ecoresponsible Endoscopic Activity COLO SOUS L'EAU

NA · University Hospital, Bordeaux · NCT06688955

What this trial studies

Colonoscopy using the water-exchange technique requires about 1 L of water per patient and can improve scope progression, comfort, and polyp detection. This single-center interventional project at CHU de Bordeaux will use bacteriologically controlled water in reusable wash bottles and collect a 200 ml sample from each bottle after the procedure for bacteriological analysis. The study will also set up and assess a sterilization and reconditioning circuit for the bottles, gather staff feedback on feasibility and acceptability, and compare the carbon footprint and waste generation versus single-use sterile bottles. Findings will indicate whether the reusable-bottle process is microbiologically safe and operationally practical for wider adoption.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults scheduled for a colonoscopy in room 4 during the Monday or Tuesday morning shifts at CHU de Bordeaux who can give informed consent and are covered by social security.

Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant, require emergency colonoscopy, need indigo-carmine chromoendoscopy, are under guardianship, or lack social security coverage are excluded and would not benefit from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could let centers replace single-use sterile bottles with safe reusable bottles, reducing plastic waste and sterilization costs without increasing infection risk.

How similar studies have performed: While water-exchange colonoscopy is supported by international recommendations, the specific use of bacteriologically controlled water in reusable bottles has not been previously validated and remains largely untested.
