Augmented reality physiotherapy for adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis
A Qualitative Evaluation of the Effects of Augmented Reality-Supported Training Methods on Body Awareness and Exercise Adherence in Adolescents With Idiopathic Scoliosis
This project tries augmented-reality–supported physiotherapy with adolescents who have idiopathic scoliosis to see if it improves body awareness, motivation, and sticking with exercises.

What this trial studies
This is a prospective qualitative (phenomenological) study of adolescents with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis who have completed at least four weeks of AR-supported scoliosis-specific physiotherapy. Participants aged 10–18 will take part in face-to-face, semi-structured interviews in Turkish about their lived experiences with the AR intervention, including body awareness, motivation, adherence, and psychosocial adjustments. Interviews will be audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis framework with support from NVivo software. Two independent researchers will code transcripts to enhance analytical rigor and theme validity.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adolescents aged 10–18 with a clinical diagnosis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis who have completed at least four weeks of AR-based physiotherapy, speak Turkish, and can provide informed consent are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients with neurological or cognitive conditions that interfere with communication, those who have not completed the AR intervention, non–Turkish speakers, or those unwilling to be audio-recorded are unlikely to benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, AR-supported physiotherapy could improve adolescents' postural awareness, increase motivation, and boost adherence to exercise programs, potentially strengthening conservative management of scoliosis.
How similar studies have performed: AR-enhanced rehabilitation and gamified exercise approaches have shown promise in small pilot studies for engagement and adherence, but robust evidence specifically for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis remains limited.
