At-home dichoptic movies to improve eye alignment in children with intermittent exotropia

Improving Control of Intermittent Exotropia

Not applicable Interventional Retina Foundation of the Southwest · NCT07272005

What this trial studies

Children with intermittent exotropia will be randomized to watch either dichoptic or standard videos streamed at home for eight weeks. The dichoptic format presents different images to each eye to reduce interocular suppression and promote binocular cooperation. Clinical measures of eye alignment and suppression will be recorded before and after the intervention to compare outcomes between groups. Participants with prior eye muscle surgery, amblyopia, prior binocular therapy, or significant neurologic/vestibular conditions are excluded and enrollment occurs at a single center in Dallas, Texas.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Children diagnosed with intermittent exotropia who have not had prior eye muscle surgery or binocular treatment, do not have amblyopia or major neurologic/vestibular conditions, and are not planning surgery within six months.

Not a fit: Children with prior strabismus surgery, amblyopia, previous binocular therapy, neurological or vestibular disorders, or those planning surgery within six months are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could offer a non-surgical, home-based therapy that improves binocular control and may reduce the need for surgery in children with intermittent exotropia.

How similar studies have performed: Dichoptic games and movies have reduced suppression in children with amblyopia, but applying dichoptic movie therapy specifically to intermittent exotropia is relatively novel.
