Assessing the suitability of the radial artery for heart surgery
A Cross-Sectional Study and a Novel Screening Survey for Radial Artery Assessment in Surgical Coronary Revascularisation
This study is testing different ways to check if the radial artery is a good option for heart surgery in adults with heart disease, while also looking at how patients feel and recover afterward.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of various screening tests in determining the suitability of the radial artery for use as a graft in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) among adults with ischaemic heart disease. Participants will undergo assessments including the Modified Allen Test, Barbeau Test, and ultrasound examination to evaluate their radial artery before surgery. The study will also collect data on patients' symptoms and recovery experiences post-surgery to understand the impact of radial artery harvesting. The findings will help inform surgical decisions and improve patient outcomes in coronary revascularisation procedures.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adult patients scheduled for elective or urgent coronary artery bypass graft surgery who are suitable for radial artery harvesting.
Not a fit: Patients who are pediatric, undergoing emergency CABG, or unable to provide consent will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the accuracy of radial artery assessments, leading to better surgical outcomes for patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study may be novel, similar studies have shown promise in improving graft selection and surgical outcomes in coronary artery bypass procedures.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Male and female adults patients undergoing elective or urgent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and radial artery (RA) harvesting in two Cardiothoracic hospitals. Exclusion Criteria: * Paediatric patients and/or adult patients undergoing emergency CABG will not be considered within the participants of this cross-sectional study, as well as patients lacking capacity to consent and non-English speaking patients requiring use of interpreters. Patients not wishing to participate in the study will also not be recruited.
