Assessing Mycoplasma genitalium infection in men who have sex with men in Hong Kong
Community Burden of Mycoplasma Genitalium Infection and Its Implications for Test-and-treat Strategies
This study is trying to understand how common Mycoplasma genitalium infections are among men who have sex with men in Hong Kong and how they spread, by having participants fill out surveys and provide samples for testing.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to evaluate the burden and transmission dynamics of Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) infection among men who have sex with men in Hong Kong. It involves a cross-sectional approach where participants will complete an online survey and provide self-collected samples for laboratory testing of STIs, including MG, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Additionally, a mathematical modeling component will simulate the transmission dynamics of MG and analyze the effectiveness of various test-and-treat strategies. The study seeks to recruit approximately 920 eligible participants.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are men who have sex with men, aged 18 or older, residing in Hong Kong, and able to communicate in English or Chinese.
Not a fit: Patients who do not identify as men who have sex with men or those unable to provide consent will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of Mycoplasma genitalium transmission and inform effective prevention strategies for at-risk populations.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on other sexually transmitted infections, this specific focus on Mycoplasma genitalium transmission dynamics in this population is relatively novel.
