Assessing Muscle Mass and Nutrition in Surgical Patients

Nutritional Assessment Project In Surgical Patients Focused On Body Composition And Functionality

Observational Universidad de Zaragoza · NCT05348590

What this trial studies

This project aims to improve nutritional assessment in surgical patients, particularly those with conditions like colon or ovarian cancer, where traditional methods often fail. It employs innovative techniques such as bioimpedance, muscle ultrasound, dynamometry, and functional tests to evaluate muscle mass and malnutrition. The goal is to enhance diagnosis and predict complications more accurately in patients undergoing major abdominal surgeries. By focusing on these advanced assessment tools, the study seeks to address the limitations of current nutritional diagnostic methods.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 scheduled for major abdominal surgery due to malignant or benign conditions.

Not a fit: Patients requiring urgent surgery or those classified as ASA IV or higher may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better nutritional management and improved surgical outcomes for patients with malnutrition.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown promise in using advanced nutritional assessment techniques, suggesting potential success for this approach.
