What this trial studies
This observational study aims to evaluate the dietary intake levels of iodine in preschool children aged 3-6 years. By conducting an iodine balance experiment with diets of varying iodine content, the study seeks to determine the lowest iodine requirement and establish safe intake levels for this age group. The research will involve collecting 24-hour urine samples and dietary records from children in regions with differing iodine levels in China, specifically Shandong and Tianjin. The findings will contribute to the revision of dietary intake recommendations for iodine in children.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are preschool children aged 3-6 years, both with mild malnutrition and those with good nutritional status.
Not a fit: Patients who are long-term low-protein or low-energy malnourished may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide critical data to establish safe iodine intake levels for preschool children, potentially improving their health and development.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited direct evidence on iodine intake levels for preschool children, similar studies have successfully established dietary recommendations for other nutrients.
