Assessing eye movements in Parkinson's Disease
Ocular Microtremor in Parkinson's Disease
Northumbria University · NCT06051877
This study is testing if a new handheld device can measure tiny eye movements in people with Parkinson's Disease to see if it can help understand their symptoms and improve their care.

What this trial studies
This observational study explores ocular microtremor (OMT) as a potential biomarker for Parkinson's Disease (PD) using a handheld device called the iTremor ONE. Participants, including those with confirmed or suspected PD and healthy controls, will undergo home-based assessments to measure OMT frequency, cognitive function, and motor skills. The study will compare OMT readings in participants both on and off their anti-parkinsonian medication, with additional laboratory assessments for balance and gait. The aim is to establish a link between OMT and neurological function to enhance clinical assessment and care for PD patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals with confirmed or suspected Parkinson's Disease, as well as healthy older adults for comparison.
Not a fit: Patients with psychiatric co-morbidities, significant head injuries, or ocular diseases may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved diagnostic tools and monitoring methods for patients with Parkinson's Disease.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of ocular microtremor as a biomarker is a novel approach, similar studies have shown promise in linking eye movements to neurological conditions.
