Assessing Eosinophilic Esophagitis with a Swallowed String Test

Eosinophil Associated Proteins and Microbiome Profiling in Adults With Eosinophilic Oesophagitis at a Single UK Tertiary Centre

Not applicable Interventional St George's, University of London · NCT06159218

What this trial studies

This study focuses on evaluating a less invasive method for diagnosing eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) using a coiled oesophageal string test. EoE is a chronic inflammatory condition of the esophagus that can lead to significant swallowing difficulties and other complications. Traditionally, diagnosis requires multiple biopsies through gastroscopy, which can be daunting for patients. The aim of this study is to determine if the string test can effectively detect biomarkers associated with EoE, potentially reducing the need for frequent invasive procedures.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 to 90 who have been diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis and are under the care of St George's University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 or over 90 years old, those with significant medical co-morbidities, or individuals who have had complications from previous endoscopies may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could provide a less invasive and more patient-friendly method for diagnosing eosinophilic esophagitis.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have indicated that less invasive methods, such as the swallowed string test, may successfully detect biomarkers for eosinophilic esophagitis, suggesting potential for this approach.
