Assessing cancer risk through family health history
Improving Identification and Healthcare for Patients With Inherited Cancer Syndromes: Evidence-based EMR Implementation Using a Web-based Computer Platform
This study is testing a new way to check cancer risk using family health history to see if it works better than the usual methods for identifying high-risk individuals who may need genetic counseling.

What this trial studies
This study involves a collaboration between Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Duke University, and Meharry Medical College to evaluate cancer risk using a family health history platform called MeTree. Participants will complete surveys and the MeTree questionnaire, which will assess their cancer risk based on established guidelines. High-risk individuals identified through this process will receive genetic counseling. The study aims to compare the effectiveness of the MeTree platform against traditional pedigree completion in clinical settings.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals receiving care at the participating sites who can read and communicate in English and are willing to use the Internet.
Not a fit: Patients who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness or have previously undergone genetic testing and/or counseling from the VUMC Hereditary Cancer Clinic may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance the identification and management of individuals at high risk for hereditary cancers, leading to improved patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in using family health history tools for cancer risk assessment, indicating that this approach is promising and not entirely novel.
