What this trial studies

This observational study evaluates the incidence and severity of atelectasis in pediatric patients undergoing elective rigid bronchoscopy. Researchers will compare outcomes between patients who are intubated and those who are not during the recovery phase post-procedure. Lung ultrasound (LUS) will be utilized as a noninvasive imaging technique to detect atelectasis, allowing for real-time evaluation without the need for patient transportation. The study aims to clarify whether intubation affects the development of atelectasis after bronchoscopy.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include pediatric patients scheduled for elective rigid bronchoscopy with an ASA physical status of I or II.

Not a fit: Patients undergoing emergent bronchoscopy or those with ASA physical status III or above may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve postoperative care and outcomes for pediatric patients undergoing bronchoscopy by identifying factors that influence atelectasis.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of LUS in detecting atelectasis is gaining traction, this specific approach in the pediatric population post-bronchoscopy is relatively novel.
