Arm and hand strength and fatigue during everyday tasks in children

Task-specific Maximal Strength and Motor Fatigability During Daily Activities of the Arms and Hands in Typically Developing Children

Observational Hasselt University · NCT07486388

This project will measure how strong and how quickly the arms and hands get tired during everyday tasks in children aged 7–18 to see if those measurements are reliable and how they compare with children who have cerebral palsy.

What this trial studies

Researchers will measure task-specific maximal strength and motor fatigability during functional upper-limb activities in typically developing children aged 7–18. Tests will be repeated to determine test–retest reliability of the strength and fatigue measurements. Results from the typically developing group will be compared with existing data from children with cerebral palsy to highlight differences in motor limitations during daily tasks. Participation requires comprehension of Dutch and excludes recent upper-limb problems or trauma.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Typically developing children between 7 and 18 years old who understand Dutch and have had no upper-limb movement problems or recent trauma in the past 6 months are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Children with current upper-limb movement problems, recent upper-limb trauma, non-Dutch speakers, or those with cerebral palsy (who are not the target group for data collection) are unlikely to benefit directly from participation.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the project could provide reliable normative measures of arm/hand strength and fatigue to help interpret motor limitations in children with cerebral palsy and guide rehabilitation goals.

How similar studies have performed: Related research has measured pediatric upper-limb strength and fatigability and shown reliable results in controlled tasks, but task-specific measurements during everyday activities and direct comparisons with cerebral palsy data are less common.
