Antibiotic approaches for Stenotrophomonas maltophilia pneumonia in ICU patients
Antibiotic Treatment for Pneumonia Caused by Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia in ICU Patients
This study tests whether using one antibiotic versus two, and whether treating for 7 days versus 14 days, helps adults on ventilators in the ICU with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia pneumonia survive and avoid recurrence.

What this trial studies
This is a retrospective observational analysis of adult patients intubated in a medical ICU at Centre Hospitalier de Saint-Denis between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2023 who had ventilator‑associated pneumonia due to Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The analysis compares outcomes between patients treated with a single antibacterial agent versus combination therapy and between treatment durations of 7 days versus 14 days. Key outcomes include survival, recurrence of pneumonia, and antibiotic resistance patterns of the isolated bacteria. Findings will be based on chart review and microbiology data from a single center.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (age 18 or older) who were intubated and mechanically ventilated in the medical ICU at Centre Hospitalier de Saint-Denis between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2023 with ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.
Not a fit: Children, non‑ventilated patients, patients with pneumonia caused by other organisms, and anyone who declined use of their data are not included and would not directly benefit from this analysis.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If patterns emerge, the results could help clinicians choose an antibiotic strategy and treatment length that improve survival and reduce recurrence in this difficult-to-treat infection.
How similar studies have performed: Previous evidence on S. maltophilia pneumonia is limited and mainly observational, and there is no definitive randomized evidence that combination therapy or longer treatment duration is superior.
