Anesthesia residents' non-technical skills when managing polytrauma patients
Assessing the Development of Non-technical Skills in Anaesthesia Resident Training Regarding the Management of the Polytrauma Patients: a Qualitative Study
The project will talk with anesthesia residents to see how they use non-technical skills like quick decision-making, situational awareness, communication, and leadership while caring for polytrauma patients at different stages of training.

What this trial studies
This observational phenomenological study uses in-depth qualitative interviews with anesthesia residents who have managed polytrauma patients in the last six months to capture their lived experience and decision processes. Interviews focus on rapid decision-making, situational awareness, communication, teamwork, and leadership, and responses will be compared across residency years. Residents within the first three months of training or taking mood-related medication are excluded, and participation requires written consent. The study is conducted at Antalya Training and Research Hospital and will use thematic/phenomenological analysis to identify recurring patterns and differences in non-technical skills.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are anesthesia residents at Antalya Training and Research Hospital who have participated in the anesthesia management of a polytrauma patient within the last six months and are beyond their first three months of residency.
Not a fit: Patients themselves are unlikely to receive direct benefit from participation because the study is observational and focuses on residents' experiences rather than a clinical intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could inform anesthesia training and help reduce human errors in the perioperative management of polytrauma patients.
How similar studies have performed: Prior research has linked non-technical skills to clinical safety and shown that training can improve these skills, but qualitative phenomenological work specifically on anesthesia management of polytrauma patients is limited.
