What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the metabolomic profiles of various vitreoretinal diseases using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis of vitreous fluid. Participants diagnosed with conditions such as idiopathic macular hole, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, idiopathic macular epiretinal membrane, and retinal vein occlusion, who require pars plana vitrectomy, will have their vitreous samples collected for analysis. The study will categorize participants into groups based on their specific diagnoses and compare metabolomic differences to identify potential biomarkers for these diseases. No interventions will be performed, as the study focuses solely on preoperative data collection and analysis of leftover vitreous fluid.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are patients diagnosed with vitreoretinal diseases who require pars plana vitrectomy.

Not a fit: Patients with vitreoretinal diseases that do not require surgery or those with a history of previous vitrectomy may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to the identification of biomarkers that improve the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of vitreoretinal diseases.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using metabolomics in vitreous fluid analysis is relatively novel, similar studies in other areas have shown promise in identifying biomarkers for various diseases.
