Analyzing stomach bacteria in gastric cancer patients using mucosal brushing
Microbiota Diversity and Composition in Gastric Cancer by Gastric Mucosal Brushing: a Cross-sectional Case-control Study
This study is trying to see how the bacteria in the stomach of people with gastric cancer differ from those without the disease to help find new ways to understand and detect gastric cancer.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to evaluate the microbiota profile in patients with gastric cancer compared to those without, utilizing a mucosal brushing technique. The research focuses on understanding the role of gut microbiota in gastric carcinogenesis, particularly in patients who are negative for Helicobacter pylori. By collecting samples through mucosal brushing, the study seeks to uncover potential biomarkers for gastric cancer and improve knowledge of microbiome changes associated with the disease. This pilot study is significant as it addresses a gap in research, particularly in Thailand, where such data is currently lacking.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and older undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy, specifically those with a diagnosis of gastric cancer or high-grade dysplasia.
Not a fit: Patients with a history of gastrointestinal or hepatobiliary surgery, recent antibiotic or probiotic use, or those who have taken proton pump inhibitors within the last two weeks may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to the identification of new biomarkers for gastric cancer, improving early detection and treatment strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While many studies have explored the microbiota in gastric cancer, this approach using mucosal brushing is novel and has not been extensively tested in Thailand.
