Analyzing oral tumors using differential mobility spectrometry

Differential Mobility Spectrometry (DMS) Based Oral Tumor Analysis

Observational Tampere University Hospital · NCT05902455

What this trial studies

This observational trial evaluates the feasibility of using differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) to analyze tissue smoke generated during the surgical excision of oral squamous cell carcinoma. Patients undergoing standard-of-care tumor removal surgery will have their tissue analyzed to identify tumor cells versus healthy tissue. The study aims to improve the understanding of healthy tissue margins, which are crucial for successful surgical outcomes. By utilizing automatic tissue analysis (ATAS), the research seeks to enhance diagnostic accuracy in real-time during surgery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients diagnosed with operable oral squamous cell carcinoma with tumors measuring 2 cm or larger.

Not a fit: Patients with tumors smaller than 2 cm or those unwilling to participate in the trial may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to more precise surgical removal of tumors, improving patient outcomes and survival rates.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of DMS in this context is relatively novel, similar approaches in tissue analysis have shown promise in other cancer types.
