Analyzing gene expression in heart tissue during surgery

Whole Genome Expression of Left Ventricular Myocardium During Cardiac Surgery

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates how genetic variants influence gene expression in heart tissue during ischemia caused by cardiopulmonary bypass in patients undergoing aortic valve surgery. Researchers will collect small samples of heart tissue before and after ischemia and compare these with blood gene expression and the patients' genetic profiles. The goal is to understand the inflammatory response during surgery and the role of specific genes in this critical period.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients over 20 years old undergoing aortic valve surgery with or without CABG surgery who will receive an apical left ventricular vent.

Not a fit: Patients who will not receive an apical left ventricular vent during their surgery will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding of heart responses during surgery, potentially enhancing patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is innovative, similar studies have shown promise in understanding gene expression related to cardiovascular conditions.
