Analyzing Errors and Performance in Minimally Invasive Surgery
Video Analysis of Errors and Technical Performance Within Minimally Invasive Surgery
This study is testing a new way to analyze videos of minimally invasive surgeries to see if it can help surgeons improve their skills and reduce mistakes, making surgeries safer for patients.

What this trial studies
This project focuses on analyzing surgical phases, skills, and errors in minimally invasive surgeries using anonymized video data captured through Medtronic's Touch Surgery™ platform. By examining these surgical videos, the study aims to identify variations in technique and performance that could lead to errors and complications. The investigators hypothesize that understanding these factors will help standardize surgical practices, enhance team communication, and ultimately improve patient safety and outcomes. The study will develop an assessment tool to provide immediate feedback to surgeons based on their performance.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and over who are undergoing elective minimally-invasive urological or gastrointestinal surgery.
Not a fit: Patients undergoing surgery with palliative intent or in unplanned/emergency settings may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could significantly enhance patient safety and surgical outcomes by reducing errors in minimally invasive procedures.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown success in using video analysis to assess surgical skills and errors, indicating that this approach is promising and not entirely novel.
