Analyzing bowel sounds in preterm babies to predict enterocolitis

Spectral Analysis of Bowel Sounds in Preterm Babies of Less Than 32 Weeks of Amenorrhea (WA) as Predictive Factor of Enterocolitis

NA · Centre Hospitalier Universitaire, Amiens · NCT05544097

What this trial studies

This study aims to record and analyze bowel sounds in preterm infants under 32 weeks of amenorrhea to identify changes that may indicate a risk for necrotizing enterocolitis. Researchers will perform spectral analysis on 30-second recordings of bowel sounds before and after enteral nutrition, conducted daily until the infants are discharged. By examining the frequencies of these sounds, the study seeks to establish physiological benchmarks and detect pathological alterations. The approach is non-invasive and cost-effective, potentially providing early indicators of gastrointestinal distress.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are preterm infants less than 32 weeks of amenorrhea.

Not a fit: Patients who are preterm infants over 32 weeks of amenorrhea or have congenital digestive malformations may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to earlier detection and intervention for necrotizing enterocolitis in vulnerable preterm infants.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using spectral analysis of bowel sounds is innovative, similar studies have not been widely reported, making this a novel investigation.
