Aloe vera gel versus paraffin tulle dressings for donor-site pain after split-thickness skin grafts

Comparison of Postoperative Pain After Application of Aloe Vera Gel Dressings With Conventional Paraffin-Based Tulle Dressings at Split-Thickness Skin Graft Donor Site

Not applicable Interventional King Edward Medical University · NCT07057557

What this trial studies

This randomized controlled trial at Mayo Hospital, Lahore will enroll 72 adults undergoing split-thickness skin grafting and randomize them to receive either Aloe vera gel dressings or conventional paraffin-based tulle dressings at the donor site. Dressings will be applied with identical secondary dressings, and grafts will be harvested at a uniform thickness under general anesthesia. Pain will be measured using a visual analogue scale on postoperative day 7 and any supplemental analgesic use will be recorded. The trial runs over six months and excludes patients with altered pain perception or known allergies to the dressings.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults aged 18–60 who need a split-thickness skin graft, can undergo general anesthesia, and do not have conditions that alter pain response or allergies to the dressings are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with diabetes, neuropathy, ongoing chemotherapy or opioid use, altered pain perception, allergies to dressing components, or those outside the 18–60 age range may not benefit or are excluded.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the Aloe vera dressing could reduce donor-site pain and lower the need for additional pain medication, improving comfort and recovery.

How similar studies have performed: Aloe vera has shown benefit for pain and healing in burns and superficial wounds, but randomized comparisons specifically for STSG donor-site pain are limited.
