ALDH2 gene variations and survival in people with esophageal cancer
ALDH2 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Prognosis of Esophageal Cancer Patients
This project will test whether common ALDH2 gene changes (such as rs671) are linked to how long people with esophageal cancer survive.

What this trial studies
This observational study will genotype ALDH2 variants, focusing on rs671, in patients with pathologically confirmed esophageal cancer and link those variants to clinical survival outcomes. Researchers will use leftover patient samples provided with consent and analyze survival data while accounting for exposures like alcohol and tobacco. The work is motivated by the known effect of the ALDH2*2 allele on acetaldehyde metabolism and its high prevalence in East Asian populations. The study is conducted at National Taiwan University Hospital and excludes female patients and minors.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult (18+) male patients with pathologically confirmed esophageal cancer who have consented to provide remaining clinical samples for research.
Not a fit: Female patients, patients under 18, or those who have not provided consent for leftover samples are not eligible and would not benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help predict prognosis and guide follow-up or treatment decisions for esophageal cancer patients based on ALDH2 genotype.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have linked ALDH2 rs671 to increased risk of upper aerodigestive cancers and multiple primary tumors in East Asian drinkers, but its specific use as a prognostic marker for esophageal cancer is less established.
