AI tool to measure jaw, neck, and shoulder movement for oral cancer care

Validity and Reliability of an AI-based Physiotherapy Evaluation System for Oromandibular and Neck-Shoulder Range of Motion in Oral Cancer Patients

Observational National Taiwan University Hospital · NCT07509619

This project tests an AI system that automatically measures jaw, neck, and shoulder movement for people with or recovering from oral cancer and compares its readings to manual measurements.

What this trial studies

This cross-sectional measurement study uses healthy adults aged 20–70 to validate an AI-based physiotherapy evaluation system for oromandibular and neck-shoulder range of motion. Participants perform standardized mouth opening and cervical/shoulder movements while the AI records real-time keypoints and calculates angles. Each movement is measured three times by the AI and independently by two blinded human raters using goniometers or a TheraBite scale, with the order of methods randomized. Reliability will be measured with intraclass correlation coefficients and agreement checked with Bland-Altman analysis and mean absolute error.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: This validation phase enrolls healthy adults aged 20–70 who have no trismus, no history of head/neck/shoulder injury or surgery, and no prior head and neck cancer treatments.

Not a fit: People with trismus, recent head/neck/shoulder surgery, active head and neck cancer treatment, or inability to follow instructions are unlikely to benefit from this validation study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the AI tool could provide faster, more objective, and more consistent range-of-motion measurements to support rehab for people with oral cancer.

How similar studies have performed: AI keypoint-tracking approaches have shown promising reliability for other musculoskeletal ROM measurements, but application specifically to oromandibular movement in oral cancer care is less well established.
