AI system to analyze breathing in children with respiratory distress

Development of an AI Assessment System for Pediatric Respiratory Distress : A Prospective Study

Observational Samsung Medical Center · NCT07370623

This project will test an AI tool that uses clinical information and video of breathing to analyze respiratory patterns in children aged 0–12 who come to emergency departments with breathing problems.

What this trial studies

This multicenter prospective observational project collects clinical and visual respiratory data from children aged 0–12 presenting to pediatric emergency departments. Collected information includes demographics, presenting symptoms, initial vital signs, KTAS triage level, emergency management, outcomes (admission or discharge), and video recordings of respiratory patterns. Researchers will use these data to develop and validate a vision-language model–based AI system for automated analysis of pediatric respiratory patterns. The study is descriptive and does not change routine clinical care.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Children aged 0–12 who present to participating pediatric emergency departments and have available clinical records and usable visual respiratory recordings during their emergency visit.

Not a fit: Children outside the 0–12 age range, those without usable clinical or video data, or those who withdraw consent would not be expected to benefit from this project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the AI could provide faster, more objective recognition of respiratory distress in children to help guide triage and treatment decisions.

How similar studies have performed: Prior AI and computer-vision research has shown promise for measuring respiratory rate and identifying breathing patterns, but vision-language models for automated pediatric respiratory distress assessment remain relatively novel and not yet widely validated.

Eligibility criteria

Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria:

* Pediatric patients aged 0 to 12 years who present to participating pediatric emergency departments.
* Patients for whom clinical data, including basic demographic characteristics (e.g., age, body weight), severity at presentation (e.g., KTAS level), vital signs, emergency department management and outcomes, as well as visual respiratory data, are available during emergency care.

Exclusion Criteria:

* Patients outside the specified age range.
* Patients with insufficient or poor-quality clinical or visual respiratory data.
* Patients whose data cannot be used due to withdrawal of consent or regulatory restrictions.
