AI-powered fundus platform to detect posterior scleral staphyloma in high myopia

AI-Empowered Fundus Imaging: Building an Intelligent Platform for Diagnosis, Treatment, and Early Warning of Fundus Diseases

Shanghai 10th People's Hospital · NCT07424755

What this trial studies

This observational study collects multimodal eye images (ultra-widefield fundus photography, B-scan ultrasonography, and optical coherence tomography) and ocular biometry from patients with high myopia and posterior staphyloma. An artificial intelligence analysis pipeline is applied to those images to identify and characterize posterior scleral staphyloma. Clinical and imaging baseline data including demographics and ophthalmic history are used to train and validate the AI models. The approach aims to standardize detection from routine imaging without altering clinical care.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults with high myopia and cataract who have posterior scleral staphyloma and complete, good-quality ultra-widefield fundus photos, B-scan ultrasound, and OCT documented are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients with poor-quality images, severe coexisting ocular diseases like advanced glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy, or serious systemic illnesses are unlikely to benefit or be eligible.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the platform could help clinicians detect posterior scleral staphyloma earlier and monitor high myopia more consistently, which may reduce the risk of vision-threatening complications.

How similar studies have performed: AI-based retinal imaging tools have shown promise for detecting various retinal pathologies, but applying AI specifically for posterior scleral staphyloma in high myopia remains relatively novel.

Eligibility criteria

Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria:

Patients with a diagnosis of cataract and high myopia and posterior staphyloma, who underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examinations including ultra-widefield fundus photography (Optos), B-scan ultrasonography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Baseline data, including demographics, health status, ophthalmic history, and ocular biometric parameters, were completely documented.

Exclusion Criteria:

Patients with poor-quality images affecting PSS identification, severe coexisting ocular diseases including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy that cause media opacities, or severe systemic diseases that could interfere with the study outcomes.
