Aerodigestive fistulas in adults treated at Strasbourg University Hospital

Aerodigestive Fistulas in Adults: Management at the Strasbourg University Hospital Between 2014 and 2023

Observational University Hospital, Strasbourg, France · NCT07299513

This project looks at medical records of adults with acquired aerodigestive fistulas treated at Strasbourg between 2014 and 2023 to see what causes them, how they are diagnosed, and what happens afterward.

What this trial studies

This is a retrospective observational review of adult patients hospitalized at Strasbourg University Hospitals with acquired aerodigestive fistulas diagnosed from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2023. Cases are identified by endoscopic or imaging confirmation (bronchoscopy, digestive endoscopy, chest CT/MRI, or barium swallow) and hospital records will be reviewed for presentation, etiology, diagnostic workup, management, and outcomes. The analysis will compare benign (largely iatrogenic) versus malignant causes and describe patterns of care and prognosis. Results are intended to summarize local experience and inform clinical decision-making for similar patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults over age 18 who were hospitalized at Strasbourg University Hospitals and diagnosed with an acquired aerodigestive fistula (confirmed by endoscopy or chest imaging) between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2023.

Not a fit: People under 18, patients with congenital fistulas, those treated outside Strasbourg University Hospitals, or anyone who explicitly refuses data use are unlikely to be included or to directly benefit from this dataset.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could help clinicians recognize aerodigestive fistulas earlier and choose treatments that improve outcomes and quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: Previous case series and retrospective cohorts have described causes and outcomes of aerodigestive fistulas, so this work builds on established observational literature rather than testing a new therapy.
