What this trial studies
This trial enrolls 1,100 adults with elevated depressive symptoms to test personalized configurations of the Healthy Minds Program (HMP) app. Participants are randomly assigned in a factorial design across six binary features — introduction videos, module ordering, practice-nudging texts, and microsupport during the intervention and follow-up — to identify which components and combinations best support sustained well-being. The intervention period lasts four weeks with weekly surveys and a three-month follow-up to measure longer-term effects. All participants use the HMP app and assignments are coded automatically to compare engagement and symptom change across conditions.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are US adults who speak English, have a smartphone and text capability, and have mild-to-moderate depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 ≥5) but no prior meditation or HMP app experience.
Not a fit: People with a history of psychosis or mania, current suicidal ideation, prior meditation or HMP use, hearing impairment, travel plans, or non-US residency are excluded and therefore unlikely to benefit from participating.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the approach could identify app features that help people with depressive symptoms stick with training and improve long-term well-being.
How similar studies have performed: Previous research on digital mindfulness and tailored mental-health apps has shown mixed but generally promising effects on symptoms and engagement, while this specific multi-factor personalization approach is relatively novel.
