What this trial studies
This observational project uses an anonymous questionnaire administered to fourth- and fifth-year general surgery residents in ACGME-accredited U.S. programs. It gathers information on who provides GI procedural training, residents' self-reported competence with common and complex GI procedures, and interest in pursuing an Advanced GI fellowship. Responses will be analyzed to identify training gaps, patterns in faculty teaching, and trainee readiness for independent GI surgical practice. No clinical interventions are performed and participation is limited to senior residents.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal participants are fourth- and fifth-year (senior) general surgery residents enrolled in ACGME-accredited U.S. residency programs.
Not a fit: Interns and junior residents (PGY-1 through PGY-3), practicing surgeons, and trainees outside ACGME-accredited U.S. programs are not eligible and are unlikely to receive direct benefit from this survey.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could guide changes in residency curricula and fellowship availability to improve graduating surgeons' readiness for independent GI practice.
How similar studies have performed: Prior surveys and workforce analyses have identified deficiencies in graduating residents' operative readiness and supported the need for additional fellowship options, so this questionnaire follows a well-established approach to quantify training needs.
